# 68% of Business Owners Now Use AI. Only 15% of Buyers Prefer It. Here's What That Means for Your Valuation.

![Dave Britton, Certified Business Intermediary and Tampa Bay business broker, discussing AI and business valuation with a business seller planning a confidential business sale in Florida](https://cdn.marblism.com/BX7cj8aMkv-.webp)

The gap is worth understanding: **68% of small business owners now use AI, but only 15% of surveyed buyers said they prefer a company that has already implemented it.** That does not mean buyers reject AI. It means owning the tool is not the same as proving its value.

In the Q3 2026 BizBuySell Insight Report, as reported by [Small Business Trends](https://smallbiztrends.com/small-business-sales-fall-7-as-median-sale-prices-jump-17/), 32% of buyers preferred to introduce AI themselves. Half of owners preparing to sell said AI had little or no impact on what a buyer would pay.

The practical lesson for a business seller is straightforward: **your AI is worth what you can prove it changed.** Buyers purchase the house, not the story about the renovation. AI may be the paint; documented earnings are the frame.

For owners considering a sale (from a SaaS or e-commerce company to an HVAC, plumbing, or pool service business in Tampa Bay) the question is not “Do we use AI?” It is “Can a buyer see its measurable effect in the business?”

## Buyers recognize outcomes, not software subscriptions

The report says AI use is growing. Among owners who use AI, 76% reported improved business performance, including 26% who said the improvement was significant. The most common applications were marketing (73%), analytics (61%), and process automation (46%). Yet 51% of AI users said AI had not changed staffing levels.

Those figures describe reported adoption and experience. They do not establish that AI caused better financial performance or that buyers will pay a premium for implementation.

A subscription on the expense list is not, by itself, a value driver. A buyer may ask whether the tool:

- Reduced a recurring operating cost.
- Helped generate revenue that can be traced and sustained.
- Improved customer retention or renewal rates.
- Shortened response times without weakening service quality.
- Made routine work less dependent on the owner.
- Created a process another person can learn and operate.

A seller’s answer becomes more credible when it connects a tool to records: invoices, payroll, customer or platform reports, operating procedures, and consistent financial statements. Claims that rely on memory or projections alone are harder to evaluate.

![Dave Britton, Certified Business Intermediary and Tampa Bay business broker, speaking with a business seller while reviewing financial statements for confidential business sale and Florida business valuation planning](https://cdn.marblism.com/TJkf1OttJTZ.webp)

## How AI results appear in SDE and EBITDA

For a smaller owner-operated company, buyers often examine **seller’s discretionary earnings (SDE)**: an earnings measure that aims to show the financial benefit available to one working owner, after appropriate adjustments to the company’s reported results.

For a larger, manager-run company, **EBITDA** (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) may be more relevant to financial analysis. The appropriate measure depends on the business and the transaction.

AI-related results do not automatically become an add-back or an earnings adjustment. If a tool reduces expenses, the financial records should help show which expense changed, when it changed, whether the savings continue, and whether a buyer must incur replacement costs. If AI increases sales, records should distinguish that revenue from broader market or seasonal changes where possible.

The same scrutiny applies to digital businesses. A SaaS company might track customer retention and support workload; an e-commerce owner might examine campaign costs and order contribution. A service operator in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, or Hernando County may have different measures, but the standard remains: connect the claim to evidence.

This fits the broader context of the Q3 2026 report. BizBuySell recorded 2,132 completed sales, down 7% year over year, while the median sale price rose 17% to $350,000. Businesses selling above $1 million made up a record 22% of transactions; their average cash-flow multiple was 3.73, compared with 2.30 for transactions below $1 million. These are market-level report figures, not a forecast or a valuation formula for an individual company.

Service businesses represented 47% of reported transactions, with 992 sales. Their median sale price was $350,000, up 21%, and median cash flow was $157,378. Buyer confidence was 49 and seller confidence 47. Thirty-one percent of buyers named a lack of quality businesses as their biggest obstacle, compared with 15% citing financing and 13% asking prices; nearly half of owners considered businesses on the market overvalued.

BizBuySell President Bob House summarized the mood: “Confidence has softened, but buyers haven't left the market. They're simply becoming more selective.”

For a seller, selectivity makes verifiable performance more useful than a technology story. ## A short AI-to-asset readiness mirror

Use this self-quiz to identify what is documented and what still needs attention. It is not a test to pass or fail. Award yourself **one point for “partly,” two for “yes,” and zero for “not yet”** on each question:

1. Can you show a buyer, in numbers, what AI changed in the business last year?
2. Can you trace the result to financial statements or another reliable business record?
3. Is the result consistent, rather than a one-time improvement?
4. Can someone other than the owner explain and operate the process?
5. Do you know whether the tool, account, data, and related rights can transfer as expected?
6. Can you explain what would happen to costs, customers, and workflow if the tool were removed?

**Use the score as a mirror:** a higher score suggests a clearer evidence trail; a lower score identifies questions to address before a buyer asks them. Any “not yet” is a useful place to start.

## Do an AI-to-asset audit this week

Set aside a short working session. For each AI tool or workflow:

1. **List the tool and purpose.** Include the subscription cost and the business process it supports.
2. **Name the metric it was meant to move.** Examples might include labor hours, lead conversion, response time, repeat purchases, or support volume.
3. **Find the evidence.** Locate the relevant financial statement, payroll record, invoice, CRM report, or platform dashboard.
4. **Compare periods carefully.** Note when the tool was introduced and what else changed during that period.
5. **Mark what survives diligence.** Can the record be explained, reproduced, and verified? Does the process transfer to a new owner?
6. **Write down remaining questions.** For example: who controls the account, what data it uses, and what replacement cost may be needed?

If the metric cannot be found, do not inflate the claim. Record the gap and begin tracking it. A documented process built over time is more useful than a confident estimate prepared at the last minute.

## Practical next steps for a future sale

- Keep tool costs, invoices, and renewal details organized.
- Track the business metric tied to each important workflow.
- Document who can operate the process and what access is required.
- Separate measured results from assumptions or forecasts.
- Review owner dependence, customer relationships, and financial records together.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does using AI automatically increase a business’s value?

No. The cited survey results show that buyers do not generally prefer a company simply because it has already implemented AI. Evidence of durable financial or operational results is more relevant than the tool’s presence.

### What AI information might a buyer examine?

A buyer may ask about tool costs, the business process involved, measurable results, account access, data, transferability, and whether the workflow depends on the owner. The exact diligence questions vary by business and transaction.

### Should an owner stop using AI before selling?

Not based on these figures alone. The useful step is to understand what the tools do, what they cost, and whether the resulting processes and outcomes are documented and transferable.

### Where can a Tampa Bay owner begin planning a sale?

Start with organized financial records and a clear view of owner dependence and transferability. LoboBusinessSales.com provides information for business owners considering a confidential business sale in Tampa Bay and across Florida.

## Takeaway: AI earns a place in the valuation conversation through evidence

AI adoption may improve how a business operates. For a sale, the decisive question is whether the result is measurable, documented, and likely to remain useful after ownership changes. That is good news for prepared sellers: the tools alone do not have to carry the story. The records can show what they accomplished.

### 1. Order a Broker Price Opinion

Owners whose businesses generate at least **$200,000 in annual owner benefit/SDE** may request a **Broker Price Opinion starting at $1,500**: a written opinion of probable market value for preliminary planning. It is not a certified business appraisal, lending approval, legal opinion, or tax opinion. Full certified appraisals typically start around **$4,000–$5,000** and can cost more. In Dave’s poker analogy, seeing your true number before the cards are dealt is the ante every serious seller pays.
